First Words

How novels begin

Sometimes I have fits of creativity. In such moments I think I would like to write a really gripping novel, and I write the first sentence:
"It was a dark and stormy night ..."
Not too bad, but I could do better:
"His fiery eye rested appreciatingly on her fine figure and she felt a burning red spreading over her face."
After reading and rereading my first attempts I usually abandon my literary career and open a good book or, to comfort myself, I look at the website Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest. (where "WWW" means Wretched Writers Welcome).
